Over 30 Years of
Simmental History
Dawson County rancher
Clay Lassle was a junior
in high school when he
attended a course on
artificial insemination.
LRS then started AI'ing
and had their first
Simmental calves in
1975. His father, Erwin
Lassle, had
predominately raised
Angus cattle, but he
offered no objection to
Clay's foray into the
continental breed.
"The Angus cattle were small and lacked
performance at that time. We thought we'd try to get something with a
little more performance," explains Clay.
LRS is a family-run operation
just 20 minutes west of
Glendive, Montana.
Clay's father is still
involved, as is Clay's
wife Marianne. Clay and
Marianne's three
children Sarah,
Stephanie and Travis, as
well as Sarah's husband
Ryan Thorson are also
very much involved in
the day-to-day running
of the ranch. Some of
the cattle are tagged
for the children's
ownership. They are
given a few cattle and a
lot of work, which means
no other workers are
needed. It's
all done by family. |

One of the Most Respected Prefixes in
the Simmental Breed...
Like the cattle of the commercial
producer, LRS cattle are range-grown. That is why LRS bulls are so commercially
appealing. They still
raise purebred Angus as
well as Simmental
cattle, and can boast
that there is little
difference in frame size
between the two breeds.
Their Simmental/Angus
cross cattle are also
very popular to the
commercial man.
They strive to produce
cattle that have balanced EPDs, are functional, solid colored, polled,
moderately framed, and can survive the rugged terrain of Eastern Montana
as well as anywhere in the country. The extensive use of AI breeding to
top sires, ET, carcass data collection, ultrasound and physical
measurements all help make the LRS prefix one of
the most respected in
the Simmental breed.
LRS runs about 200 cows, both percentage
and purebred Simmentals, and sells 60-70 bulls per year. The bulls calve
easily, their progeny wean heavy, go on to gain efficiently in the feedlot and hang well
on the rail. LRS females are moderate-sized cows that are easy-keeping and
hard working.LRS is extremely proud of
the cattle they have introduced to the breed. Their genetics are in almost
every A.I. Stud in North America. Most of all, they are proud to have
their cattle work for the cattleman who sells his calves by the pound.
They welcome visitors anytime - stop by and
see them just 2½ miles off I-94! |
